BOTOX is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the world, however in the recent years facial fillers have become popular as well. Dermal fillers such as Juvederm, Voluma, Restylane, and Perlane represent some of the most common procedures. BOTOX and dermal filler are commonly confused as being the same thing. Let’s discuss some of the differences between the two products.

Over-animation of the facial muscles in the forehead, above the nose, and around the eyes can lead to deep wrinkles in the skin. These deep lines can cause a person to look angry, tired or aged. BOTOX helps by paralyzing the muscles that cause these wrinkles, leaving you with a more youthful looking face.

BOTOX treatments take about 15-20 minutes in-office with no downtime. Botox takes effect 5-7 days following the initial treatment and lasts roughly 3-4 months per treatment. Effects are maintained through regular treatments.

Dermal fillers are different in that they aren’t injected into the muscle. They are injected into the actual wrinkle lines or deeper into the skin to restore lost volume. Fillers are best used on smile lines and wrinkles below the mouth. They can also be used for other wrinkles and creases on the face, augmenting lips and filling out hollow cheeks. The effects of dermal fillers are instant and have longer lasting results.

Juvederm, Restylane, and Perlane use hyaluronic acid for results that can last up to 6 months. They also tend to stimulate collagen production so that overtime, touch-ups can be spaced further apart and/or less product is needed.
